Detroit cop under FBI investigation dies in apparent suicide in Sterling Heights

According to The Detroit News, detective James Napier — a Detroit cop was was being investigated by the FBI for drug-related corruption — died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday morning. Napier, who worked in the 12th precinct, was found dead in his car outside of his parents' home in Sterling Heights. He was 35.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig disbanded the Narcotics Section in July due to "systemic problems uncovered during an Internal Affairs investigation" involving the handling of drugs and evidence, according to the News, who added that sources said Napier was one of the officers being investigated. A source told the Free Press that marital problems may also have been a factor.

Attendees observed a moment of silence during a Board of Police Commissioners meeting Thursday afternoon according to the News, with commissioner Rev. Edgar Vann saying, “I don't care what the circumstances were, it's appropriate to have a moment of silence.”
