Detroit City FC is moving up the ranks.
The Hamtramck-based soccer team announced on Thursday that it would be joining a newly formed league in association with the National Premier Soccer League. Detroit City FC will join ten other clubs across the country as founders of the new league. Though the league won't go into effect until the 2020 season, from August to November 2019, the league's eleven teams will compete in the first-ever Founder's Cup.
“We are very excited to bring a new brand of community-based soccer to the U.S. market,” said NPSL Chairman Joe Barone in a press statement. “Beginning with the Founders Cup, fans will be able to enjoy watching authentic clubs compete with professional players and staff. This new venture will build upon the success and experience of NPSL and its nationwide network of local soccer club members.”
Detroit City FC currently competes in the Great Lakes Conference of the Midwest Region NPSL with teams from Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and more. The new league will see Detroit City FC compete with ten other teams nationwide, including ASC San Diego, Cal FC, California United Strikers FC, Chattanooga FC, FC Arizona, Miami FC, Miami United FC, Milwaukee Torrent, New York Cosmos, and Oakland Roots.
