A group of Detroit musicians and artists rolled out a music video over the weekend that calls out Donald Trump’s racist actions and policies.
The video titled, “Racist Trump Against the 313,” amassed more than 106,000 views on YouTube since its release Saturday.
The 90-second video, produced by the Detroit Area Artists and Musicians Against Trump (DETAMAT), opens with the image of the Ku Klux Klan burning a cross.
“From the KKK, up to today, racists have tried to steal Black votes away,” the lyrics begin. “The evidence is clear, for all to see: Trump’s biggest Black vote attack in history!”
The song refers to Trump’s attempts to overturn the 2020 election results through lawsuits targeting cities with large Black populations, such as Detroit, Philadelphia, Atlanta, and Milwaukee.
“If Trump had succeeded in these lawsuits, he would have thrown away the votes of Black Americans in these key swing states,” DETAMAT spokesman H. Daniel Mujahid said in a news release Monday evening. “That’s who he is, and he’ll try again next month.”
With the 2024 presidential race heating up, Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign is counting on strong support from Black voters, especially in swing states like Michigan. But a recent national poll shows 14% of Black Americans plan to vote for Trump, a sharp increase from the 8% he secured in 2020, which could help tip the scales in Michigan.
“At this critical juncture, the choice is clear: vote for Harris,” Mujahid said. “Black men in particular must consider who Trump is — a man who tried to suppress and steal the vote of every Black man and woman in every major African-American city in a swing state.”
The video, financed and produced by Progressive Source PAC, is part of a broader effort to stop Trump, which they call the “Stop Trump Dictatorship project.”
Jonathan Greenberg, the PAC’s founder, said the stakes are too high to hold back.
“Trump is the most unrestrained racist to run for president in 50 years,” Greenberg said. “This video uses the R-word because the voters need to understand the truth about who Trump is and what he’s done.”
Greenberg has a long history of exposing Trump’s lies, having famously reported how Trump, using a fake name, conned his way onto the Forbes 400 list in the 1980s. Today, his focus is on making sure that voters understand the gravity of what’s at stake in the upcoming election.
The song warns that Trump supporters plan to suppress the vote in Detroit.
“Now these MAGA mother fuckers are headed to the D to bring their vote suppression to the 313,” the lyrics continue. “We gotta rock the vote. On this we must agree, cause Trump ain’t shit against the mighty D.”
The track comes days after Trump dissed the Motor City and the Harris campaign at the Detroit Economic Club last week.
“Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president,” Trump said. “You’re gonna have a mess on your hands.”
