Michigan ranks 37th in the nation for healthy hearts, with some 300 heart disease deaths per 100,000 residents a year. That’s compared to No. 1 ranked Utah’s 192 deaths annually. Obesity, high blood pressure, smoking and sedentary lifestyles all lead to the disease, second only to smoking for causing preventable American deaths.
This week, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick launches Mayor’s Health Challenge at Ford Field to help residents take control of their health. Residents are offered free screenings, daily through Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Parking is free and no ID or proof of insurance is needed. After registration, the visit should take 30 minutes. Detroit Medical Center and Pfizer Inc. will screen for blood sugar, blood pressure, lipids and body-fat percentage, as well as arthritis and depression. Experts will be on hand to discuss results.
So put down that Coney and get your fat ass to Ford Field.
