Anti-nuclear activists from throughout the Great Lakes region will gather in western Michigan in mid-August to discuss issues and devise strategies.
Sponsors of the event being held at Camp Soni Springs near Three Oaks expect 500 to 1,000 people to participate in the weeklong activities.
"We hope to educate, motivate and teach various skills," says Dave Menzer of the Citizen Action Coalition of Indiana, one of eight groups involved.
"I think this is gong to be a real eye-opening experience in the region," says Menzer. "Our hope is that this will be the first of many camps. The goal is to begin a real movement to rid the Great Lakes region of nuclear power altogether."
Along with educational and skills-building workshops, the camp will feature a variety of guest speakers and groups presenting information on subjects ranging from alternative energy and environmental justice to investigative journalism techniques and nukes in space. There will also be plenty of music.
