On Wednesday night we checked out the Adcraft Club's eighth annual D Show at the Masonic Temple, the award ceremony honoring Detroit's top admen and adwomen. Whether there is "good" or "bad" advertising is a debate for another time, but for one night, creative directors, art directors, copywriters, video editors, and the rest took a break from their busy schedules to pat themselves on the back for their hard work.
Being an award ceremony and all, attendees were dressed to the nines — for the most part. You know how "creatives" can be. Carhartt's in-house copywriter was decked entirely in his company's threads, which of course is not in the business of making formal attire, much to the annoyance of one senior ad-dude. When we suggested he was merely "repping his brand," the ad-dude rolled his eyes and made the hand gesture universally recognized as "sucking the D." When asked by another attendee if we were also "unfortunately" in the industry, we responded that we were in the press, a different unfortunate industry — to which he replied that at least journalism has integrity. Fun stuff!
Other highlights include accidentally backing up into an alpha male power handshake in full effect. It felt like two pythons trying to kill each other.
Between visits to the open bar and musical performances, the ceremony dealt out awards for mostly automotive-centric ads, like Chrysler's Bob Dylan-starring Super Bowl spot. In non-auto news, an "Ambassador" award was bestowed upon Jason Hall for his work with the establishing the Detroit cycling group the Slow Roll (with Hall himself the subject of an Apple ad earlier this year).
