Bits & pieces

Last week and again this week, MT columnist Jack Lessenberry has been railing about the bum's rush being given Catholic Bishop Thomas Gumbleton (see Page 7 for this week's barb-slinging.) As a side note, News Hits would like to point out that the much-esteemed Gumbleton is slated to receive the MLK Spirit of Detroit award Monday as part of a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event being held at Central United Methodist Church (corner of Woodward and East Adams). Much will be going on all day, including a keynote address by author and peace activist Marianne Williamson. There will also be a performance by the Mosaic Youth Choir and the Ladywood Choir. For all the details go to mlkdetroit.org.

We'd also like to pass on this message from Scott Romp of the local nonprofit group Veteran's Haven: "With over a half-million homeless veterans in our country and nearly 5,000 homeless veterans in the Detroit metro area, a serious problem exists that is not going to get any better because of funding cuts and more troops returning home from the Middle East." To raise money, a fundraiser called "Get 'em out of the gutter" will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, from 12:30 to 4 p.m., at Town & Country Lanes bowling alley, 1100 S. Wayne Rd., Westland. Cost is $20. Businesses are also needed to donate raffle prizes. To learn more go to vetshaveninfo.org or call 734-728-0527.
