The Baldwin Public Library supports the intellectual freedom of its patrons. That's why it's hosting Banned Books Week, which it will be celebrating starting Sunday, Sept. 21 through Saturday, Sept. 27 in accordance with the American Library Association.
Adults can participate in "A Blind Date with a Banned Book" where they can check out wrapped books, going on a "blind date" with texts that have been challenged by society.
Teens can read Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi on Thursday, Oct. 2 and then attend a screening of the movie on Thursday, Oct. 9.
Children are invited to attend a Captain Underpants party on Tuesday, Sept. 23 at 4:15 p.m. The children's book the party inspired was actually one of the most challenged books in 2013.
To better celebrate Banned Books Week, librians and library workers have suggested a reading list that includes such famously contested texts as The Catcher in the Rye, The Hunger Games, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Giver, In the Night Kitchen, Lord of the Flies, and The Great Gatbsy, among others.
