A WSU video crew will be hanging out at the Boll YMCA (1401 Broadway in downtown Detroit) to record whatever absurd anecdotes you're ready to share for their "Detroit Stories" historical archives, and for $20 — who doesn't have $20 to throw away?! — you'll get a DVD copy of the recording too. Lovely lucre — On Thursday, Oct. 26, Cranbrook Art Museum announced that the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation and the Samuel and Jean Frankel Foundation made a $10 million commitment of support to both Cranbrook's Academy of Art and Art Museum. (This on the very same day that the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit — a museum, mind you, with no plans for a permanent collection — opened its doors.) The gift is the largest since the original investment by Cranbrook founders George and Ellen Booth. This news arrives two years after the Maxine and Stuart Frankel Foundation made the same donation to the University of Michigan's Museum of Art for a new 55,000-square-foot wing, appropriately named after the Frankel family. Stuart Frankel is president of Stuart Frankel Development Co., a real estate development firm in Troy. The funds will be used at Cranbrook to improve the museum and academy's mechanical systems and to upgrade their storage for permanent collections. Also, Cranbrook Art Museum and MoCAD will be working together to host the international exhibition Shrinking Cities early next year.
