Lowell Boileau, the multi-faceted artist behind the Fabulous Ruins of Detroit Web site at detroityes.com, will present DETROIT360, a multimedia retrospective of his work. Boileau is a self-taught artist who has been exhibiting his paintings since 1980. His keen eye and fascination with the urban landscape resulted in his famed Ruins site, which is both artistically engaging and historically educational, and home to a bustling discussion forum. An exhibition of new work from G. Jesse Gledhill, entitled Struggle, comes downtown this month. Raised in a log cabin and world-traveled, Gledhill didn’t become an artist until middle age. His paintings and drawings reflect the triumphs and travails of black Americans. In his own words, “I wanted to create images that are approachable, but tick like a bomb.” The exhibit opens Jan. 15, at Swords Into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery, 33 E. The Afrocentric paintings of Jon Onye Lockard are collected in a new show called This is my story…This is my song! The work of Jon Onye Lockard. The opening reception will include a lecture from the artist about “The Artist as a Storyteller,” as well as a performance from gospel singer Rev. Martin Miller.
