You might remember our blog post on the First International Conference on Men's Issues, organized by MRA group A Voice For Men, last week — and the ample stir it caused in the comment section.
On June 7, those opposed to the Detroit conference are gathering in Grand Circus park at 10 a.m. to protest the event scheduled for June 26 through 28 at the DoubleTree Hotel at 525 W. Lafayette Blvd., Detroit.
Following a series of speakers, protestors will march to the hotel, where organizers will ask that the event be cancelled.
A petition circulating on change.org, asking the same task of the hotel, has received 2,600 signatures. Tumblr blogger fatbodypolitics, who said in a post that she helped organize the protest, said that she feels employees of the hotel are being threatened by AVFM.
However, AVFM has assured that they a non-violent organization and and Paul Elam, founder and publisher for the group, is demanding that no AVFM staff attend the protest or engage with the organizers.
Elam said that last Friday he was told by the DoubleTree Hotel that AVFM would have to pay for security and insurance for the conference due to threats related to violence, death and property damage to the hotel. To cover costs, some of which include hiring off-duty Detroit police officers, Elam started a campaign on fundanything.com, and has since raised more than $29,000.
Elam has also reminded protestors that the group has a contract with the hotel, and that he believes efforts to stop the event will be futile.
The conference will deal with issues like suicide, child custody, family law, homelessness, paternity fraud and parental alienation, according to Elam's page on fundanything.com.
