50 impounded vehicles to be sold during Detroit municipal auction

The city will sell off yet another fleet of impounded vehicles during a municipal auction that will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 24.

During the auction 50 abandoned, booted, and towed vehicles will be auctioned off to the highest bidder — but the winner must have a valid driver's license and be able to pay cash for the vehicle before driving off the lot. Vehicles must be paid for in full and picked up by 5 p.m. after which time storage fees will begin to accrue.

Owners must also pay to have the vehicles re-keyed.

These auctions happened periodically. The last time around, most of the vehicles were in pretty poor shape. The city assigns each car a rating of R1 (worst body condition) through R4 (best body condition). All vehicles auctioned off at the Jan. 10 auction were rated R1.

This time around, 40 of the vehicles are rated R1 (all abandoned), but nine vehicles (booted or towed) are rated R2 or R3.

None of the vehicles are available for inspection before the auction.

The auctions will begin promptly at 9 a.m. at 5997 Caniff between Mound and Mt. Elliot.
