You might be paying to see Morris Day sing, but what you’re really witnessing is bigger than a musical act. When the man dipped his toes in acting in the ’80s and ’90s, he played the antagonist to Prince in movies. Since then, he hasn’t shaken the exaggerated vanity and strutting bravado he loves to personify in public. A performer since high school, Day has dabbled in musical genres from rock and pop to R&B and funk.

Morris Day and The Time will perform on Thursday, Feb. 1 at Sound Board; Show begins 8 p.m.; 2901 Grand River Ave., Detroit; 313-309-4614; soundboarddetroit.com; Tickets are $35-$45.
