They were Bikini Kill and they wanted "Revolution-Grrl Style." With that they kicked off a full-frontal attack on the boys' club of rock 'n' roll. Love them or hate them, Kathleen Hanna and company are to blame for a lot of the current force of the Woman in Rock, even though it took some Canadian folkie-supposed former child TV star to cement the deal with Mainstream USA.
Bikini Kill finally disbanded sometime around 1998, really better as a means of attack than as a shambling punk band. Hanna, BK's main mouthpiece, first reinvented herself as Julie Ruin on last year's solo trip. Now she returns with Johanna Fateman and Sadie Benning as Le Tigre.
Le Tigre is definitely the now sound, powered by DJ beats, guitar, Farfisa and samples à la Beck. Hanna's shouts have turned to shout-outs. It's a political rally turned house party combining the new wave of Bis and Dub Narcotic's indie soul, with Hanna's trademark biting sarcasm to boot.
It's a well-deserved victory dance for all the grrl co-conspirators which still lashes out at Rudy Giuliani and "hipster" kids.
If we really knew the meaning of Christmas, every "Total Request Live" kid would wake up with this in their stocking and we'd have a real Y2K problem.
