The International Pop Overthrow — which takes its name from the classic Material Issue tune, of course — has long been one of the major music fests in Los Angeles every summer. The festival picked up the mantle for power-pop that was left when the similar L.A.-based Poptopia fest ceased to be. Over the years, organizer David Bash has moved the festival to various parts of the country
and even to that overseas birthplace home of power-pop — namely, the Cavern Club in Liverpool, England.
For the past several years, Bash had held IPO in Chicago during the first part of April. This year, however, he’s hitting Detroit before moving onto Chi-town. The first Detroit IPO is scheduled to take place (in a condensed format) at Paycheck’s Lounge in Hamtramck from April 8th through the 12th, following on the heels of similar IPO Fests in Atlanta, Georgia and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A full schedule hasn’t been officially released yet — but watch this space, as well as the paper, for full details as they come.
