Tony Wilson, one of the fathers of club culture and the indie label boom, has died of kidney cancer in Manchester at the age of 57. A former TV and radio journalist, Wilson was the founder of the indie Factory Records label, where he launched the careers of Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays. He later founded the legendary Hacienda Club, a forerunner of the whole rave scene, in his native Manchester. Creation Records founder Alan McGee, the man who discovered Oasis and Primal Scream, told the NME today: "Factory Records was the template for every indie label with its 50-50 deals, and I can honestly say that without Factory, there would have been no Creation. In fact, if it wasn't for his talk to us in 1985, I might have quit music altogether." Wilson's colorful life was depicted in the terrific 2002 movie, 24 Hour Party People, one of the best music movie bios of this decade.
