OK, back to the present....

The Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit (CAID) has announced the return (after a one-year hiatus) of Summer Smash -- the popular local music festival that originated in 1999. The three-day event will take place at the CAID next weekend, August 21st through the 23rd, and will be headlined by such hot local acts as the Dead Bodies, Silverghost, the Four Hour Friends and the Friendly Foes, among others.

"We have dotted our I's and crossed all our T's", says festival director (and MT contributor) Laura Witkowski, referring to the police raid that took place at the establishment earlier this summer. "CAID has filed a petition with the Detroit City Council. Professional security and legal support will be on hand during the festival to ensure our guests and members' civil rights and personal dignity is not violated by anyone."

This year's Summer Smash is also noteworthy for what the organizers plan to do with the money: All profits will go to a special grant fund for Detroit music and performance artists. "The connection between CAID and the music scene in Detroit is strong, and we felt this was a great way to further build that connection," says CAID board member, Aaron Timlin. The organization will invite musicians and performers to apply for grant funds that could cover costs for such things as touring, recording, equipment and anything else that may further their creative endeavors.

A complete festival schedule is available at here and here. Tickets are $16 for the entire three days or $5 for Thursday and $8 per day for Friday and Saturday. Tickets may be purchased online or at the door.
