The unbelievable story of Sixto Rodriguez — an unassuming Cass Corridor musician who curiously became a cult musical phenomenon in South Africa — was unearthed in 2012 when fans tracked the mysterious man down, making him the subject of an Academy Award-winning documentary Searching for Sugarman.

His unexpected superstardom that came with the resurrection of his recorded 1960s material and the discovery of his insane overseas album sales (which allegedly rivaled that of Elvis Presley) spurred a world tour and several television appearances. Since then, Rodriguez has continued to keep a low profile — which makes this particular performance all the more special.

Rodriguez will perform at 7 p.m on Friday, Aug. 31 at the Garden Theater; 3929 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313-832-0888; thegardentheaterdetroit.com; Tickets are $45.
