After the whole Apple Music debacle, Danny Brown’s Live at the Majestic has been released for download or streaming via his personal website.
The footage is from 2016 and 2014 and it serves as a reincarnation of the old Danny. You remember — wild hair and fucked-up teeth XXX Danny. It’s been about a year since he’s opted for a regular haircut and a West Bloomfield grill, but it feels like it was last week.
Much of the documentary Brown is dressed in a Ralph Bear sweater, Cartier frames, and jeans. We see him play with his cats and mix supplements with alcohol. Andrew Cohn directed the 45-minute documentary that gives us a lot the Brown we know: rolling blunts, drinking Henny, preforming “Smoking & Drinking,” “25 Bucks,” and “Dip” (just to name a few). The footage of the performance is outstanding and filmed in Detroit.
Brown’s transparency is also on full display as he talks about his relationship with the Motor City. He doesn’t hate Detroit and he’s not afraid of Detroit; he knows Detroit and loves Detroit for what it is. He goes into detail about dealing with depression and how there were periods in his life where he didn’t want to live anymore. Brown also addresses his longtime drug use — how drugs were used once upon a time in his life to deal with poverty and being a starving artist — but then he used them to deal with the fame and stress of popularity.
The film has cameos from Run the Jewels, Dart Parker, DJ Sky Walker, Sintex, Dopehead, Markham, and ZelooperZ. Ultimately, this is a must see for any Danny Brown fan and any hip-hop fan that wants to know who Danny Brown is behind the witty morbid bars and iconic grin.
