‘Tis the season, it appears, for rock ‘n’ roll reunions. Not only are Rhythm Corps and Sponge performing a Detroit show this weekend (see item below), but Luke Mucus & The Phlegm, one of the first “punk rock” bands to appear on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing during the late ‘70s, are getting back together this weekend as well. Led by singer-songwriter Eric Winer (aka Luke Mucus) and most famous for their indie single “Jesus Chrysler,” the band will be opening for Rhythm Corps and Sponge at the Royal Music Theatre on Saturday night, December 22nd. Not only that -- but the band will be playing two full sets as a headliner the night before in the Pike Room at the Crofoot in Pontiac. Opening is Circus Boy (no, not Micky Dolenz, silly, but a band comprised of ex-members of such Motor City punk and new wave stalwarts as Flirt, Coldcock, the Cubes and Bootsy X & The Lovemasters).

Also reunited recently is the Verve Pipe, another band formed at Michigan State that managed to get itself signed to RCA Records and ended up selling more than three million records after charting hits on both mainstream and alternative radio. The band – featuring original founding members Brian Vander Ark (guitar/vocals) and Donny Brown (drums), in addition to keyboardist Doug Corrella and guitarist Dan Matheny – kicked off this latest tour last week in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. They make it home in time for the holidays, with shows scheduled at downtown’s Saint Andrew’s Hall on Friday, December 21st and then at the Intersection in Grand Rapids on Saturday the 22nd.
