In our recent Holiday Gift Guide we tried to pull your coattails to the live Lyman Woodard Organization Orchestra (Uuquipleu), which captured the band’s exuberant March 3, 2010, concert. Now the group is reconvening to perform live again in celebration of the live recording. (That’s the kind of circular thinking we can get behind).
The concert on December 6th will feature: Leonard King-drums; Ron English-guitar; Dwight Adams and John Douglas-trumpet; Steve Hunter-trombone; Keith Kaminski, Johnny Evans, Mark Kieme and Rick Steiger-woodwinds; Chris Codish-organ; James Simonson-bass; Jerry LeDuff, Miguel Gutierrez and Diego Melendez-drums and percussion.
It all happens at 7, at the International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit. Tickets are only $5, but no advance purchase is available, so early arrival is highly recommended.
Also on the horizon of note: A high-point of last spring’s music was the New Beginnings concert, a fundraiser for the Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan. The event at the Music Box at the Max Fisher gathered two dozen of Detroit’s finest plus musical directors Buddy Budson and Keith Vreeland to play the music of Doug Halladay (as arranged by Budson, Vreeland, Gary Schunk and Charles Boles). Nine of the selections have now been gathered as the CD New Beginnings (full disclosure: yours truly was MC for the original event and penned the liner notes). Again, it’s a fundraiser for the Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan. The release party is Monday, Dec. 5, 5-8 p.m. in the Allesee Rehearsal Hall of the Max. Halladay owes his life to a bone marrow transplant, so this is music about life on multiple levels.
