Bell's visuals for 2018's, "Nappy," established her jarringly soulful voice, dramatic aesthetic, and her message of empowerment. Her latest, “Soothing”, follows suit as it tells a story of a grief-stricken woman searching for comfort through unstable intimacy.
The visual features Bell in various states of unraveling as she grapples with the loss of a loved one, searching for the cure to grief in churches and bedrooms. Bell opens the song with a gutting description of emptiness — “Darkness has her hands around me / I don’t recognize myself in the mirror." Through Bell's warm and sultry vocal prism, she makes a painful admission during the song's refrain that her "demons need soothing.”
Bell says that the lyrics and film speak to using “meaningless and physical intimacy as a distraction while falling deeper into despair" only to realize that there's no escaping the process of processing pain.
