On November 10, 1997, making way for Comerica Park and Ford Field, the Gem/Century building broke the world record for the heaviest building to ever be moved on wheels. It was a short trip, (five blocks or so), but this sojourn managed to preserve both the ambiance and style of a unique D-town fave. The Gem Theatre (home to one of Detroit's longest-running comedies, Shear Madness, and many other theatrical productions) and the Century Club (a Mission-style building that boasts a dining room and auditorium) survived the stress of relocation and renovation and can now be touted among Detroit's most history-rich locales. Have time for a romantic dinner before the show? Check out the Century Club's chichi menu - it's got everything from goat cheese tarts to tenderloin Normandy. An evening of dinner and theater at the Gem is perfect for anyone who is feeling culture-deprived.
