Before the news blog sporting the adjectivally constructed URL version came online (and long before the current network of scene-adoring blogs), there was a site called, simply, motorcityrock.com. Dedicated to archiving the sights, sounds, ephemera and, yes, evidence of bad haircuts from Detroit rock days gone by, Motor City Rock has provided a valuable link between the heady pre-Internet days of Detroit rock 'n' roll handmade fliers and zines and the not-so-heady-sometimes Web-connected Detroit music scene. And over the course of the past couple years, the site has really gotten stuffed full of goodness. It's now boasting information on 1,009 bands and 146 venues. Hit the site and you'll find not just choice photos, MP3s, fliers and show dates from outfits like the Hysteric Narcotics, the Herb Tarlicks, DC Drive, the Mutants and many others, but the really good stuff, like MP3s from long-forgotten outfits, fascinating cross-links connecting bands like '80s pop-metal-punk maestros the Cadillac Kidz to such modern marvels as Pas/Cal. The venue listings cross-reference bands and opening acts as thoroughly as possible. It's a community-driven effort and a truly inspiring record of our civic musical legacy covering nearly two decades. Tune in, blowed out
After all the rock, rawk, volume and sweat righteously ladled out by many bands at Blowout, you just may find yourself jonesing for something a little more mellow, yet still grounded in the rock world. May I take a moment to recommend the blissfully droned-out charms of some bona fide Detroit (and beyond) Space Rock as purveyed by the stalwart (14 years running!) space captains Mind Expansion Records? Sure, why not? It's the kind of sonic balm that just may actually burrow its way into your brain in that half-sleeping, half-waking post-weekend haze. The label, run by Fuxa founder Randall Nieman, has been pretty active as of late releasing jams by such TerraStock-friendly artists as the Telescopes, the Projects, Spectrum, Dean Wareham & Brita Philips (Mercury Rev) and many others who don't poke through the media landscape as often. Plus, they've recently launched the Radio Mind Expansion podcast with joints by label artists as well as a podcast version of WHFR's long-running space-indie-shoegaze-dedicated "Life With Larry" program. Hellz, there's even a ridiculous 13-minute streaming podcast called "Toking with Tommy" that's so nerd-erifically funny every bonged-out, bored-stiff Trekkie should have a listen.
