Since Aretha Franklin’s passing, Detroit has turned up to pay tribute to the Queen of Soul. The latest to preserve Franklin’s legacy is Music Hall’s Jazz Cafe, which will reopen its doors as Aretha’s Jazz Cafe. The grand opening gala will invite a slew of musicians, many of whom have played alongside Franklin, as well as Detroit vocalists Kimmie Horne, Gwen Foxx, Cherri Black, and more. Lola George will host the free evening of music as a nod to the many free performances the Queen of Soul put on for the people of Detroit, including last year’s Detroit Music Weekend ceremony.
Aretha's Jazz Cafe grand reopening will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 11 at Aretha's Jazz Cafe; 350 Madison Ave., Detroit; 313-887-8532; jazzcafedetroit.com; General admission is free, reserved seating $35.
