Michigan artists to look for on Record Store Day: Danny Brown, Iggy Pop, Madonna, and more

Record Store Day, an annual celebration of independent record stores, put up the new list this week with a handful of Detroit and Michigan natives present. RSD is an excuse for vinyl nerds to wait in line outside record stores for hours in hopes of there still being copies left of what they want. Not every item with worth waiting hours for, but 10 years on RSD still manages to have some worthwhile releases.
Danny Brown is set to come out with a 10” picture disc for “Ain’t it Funny” from 2016’s Atrocity Exhibition with “Worth It,” his collaboration with Clams Casino, on the b-side. Picture discs are iffy—they typically don’t sound very good and can potentially damage your needle. But for some collectors, picture discs can look good on display and the art on this one is “gorgeous,” as the RSD listing puts it.
Post Pop Depression: Live at Royal Albert Hall is a triple LP from Iggy Pop’s most recent tour for his highly successful last album. This performance was released last year on Blu-ray/DVD and is now available for the first time on vinyl. The Detroit show from last year was phenomenal, so if it’s anything like that it will make a solid addition to any Iggy Pop/The Stooges collection.
Dance Mix is a 1985 South American-only release from Madonna (she’s from Michigan whether she likes it or not) that’s getting a worldwide reissue 32 years laters. It features her song “Into the Groove” from the movie Desperately Seeking Susan, which she notably starred in.
Ann Arbor activist, poet and spiritual guide to the MC5, John Sinclair, put out his first full-length release last year. The album, Mobile Homeland, is getting the Record Store Day treatment. And renowned punk artist with significant Michigan ties, Patti Smith, is reissuing her debut single, her cover of “Hey Joe,” with the original picture sleeve.
A few years ago Eminem was featured on the Busta Rhymes track “Calm Down,” which is getting its first release on vinyl. Twizted and Blaze Ya Dead Homie are getting their collaborative tracks “Necromancy” and “Triple Threat” pressed on a 7” picture disc, an essential release for all juggalos/ettes. And Detroit hip-hop duo Frank n Dank are putting out The Jay Dee Tapes, a collection from their personal archives of their collaborations with J Dilla early in his career.
No word from Third Man on what their release(s) will be, but they did tease a new book through Third Man Publishing about their “Blue Room” series of 7”’s set to come out on RSD. There are always items added to the list before the day, so will Third Man reissue The White Stripes’ Icky Thump for its 10th anniversary? Keep your eyes peeled.
