Meghan Remy is the core of U.S. Girls — an experimental pop project that is an exhilarating blend of influences, from 1950s-era Betty Hutton and more recent indie pop acts like Joanna Newsom and Tennis.

Remy launched the project in her hometown of Chicago and relocated to Toronto where her record Half Free earned a Juno Award nomination and was a shortlisted finalist for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize. “A woman’s work is never done/ She doesn’t sleep ‘til she sees the sun/ Transformation that was promised made her come undone,” Remy sings on “Woman’s Work” — one example of her ability to display a prismatic view of female narratives.

U.S. Girls will perform on the El Club patio at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 3; 4114 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit; 313-279-7382; elclubdetroit.com; Event is free.
