Matthew Dear shares new song featuring Tegan and Sara ahead of new album

Good news for Matthew Dear fans: the DJ, composer, shapeshifter, and Ghostly Ann Arborite is gearing up for his first release since 2002's Beams. On Tuesday, Dear premiered the first proper taste from his forthcoming record Bunny (Oct. 12) via Billboard and his third collaboration with indie sisters Tegan and Sara.

"Horses" finds Dear returning to visceral storytelling by means of clever synths and emotive repetition. Amidst babbling brook-esque synths, rolling, droning bass, and the haunting conversational marriage between Dear's vocals and Tegan and Sara's harmonizing, "Horses" grazes on both art-pop and unexpected singer-songwriter sensibilities.

According to Dear, "Horses" is a "traditional love song" inspired by literal horses and their innate majestic constitution.

"I'm kind of like, "Fuck, I wish I could just be a horse, you know?," Dear says. "This majestic, beautiful animal that understands you have to sometimes stand in a field and look at the horizon."

Dear first teamed up with the "Walking With A Ghost" duo in 2013 for a cover of "Pale Shelter" by Tears for Fears. Last year, Dear teased Bunny with the release of his solicited Tegan and Sara collaboration "Bad Ones".

“I love being in Matthew’s music brain and leaving little ideas of my own wherever it makes sense. His songs sometimes feel abstract, like puzzles that I can’t stop listening to," Sara Quin revealed in a press release. "It continues to be a great privilege and honor for us to collaborate with him."
