It might seem off-putting to describe music as being dischordent, but grunge outfit Speedy Ortiz manages to marry unsettling arrangements with sinister sincerity — and it’s all catchy as hell. “I make a frown/ I always wear it upside down/ ’Cause life is carnage/ I once was lost, but now I’m floundered,” sings frontwoman Sadie Dupuis on “Lucky 88,” the band’s single from its latest record,Twerp Verse. Calling to mind the Breeders, Pavement, or Screaming Females, Speedy Ortiz challenges rock purists with their warped dissonance.
