5. Rock City: We really look forward to playing Detroit again. As people and music fans, it's a big deal to us. We'll show respect and give it what we got.
4. The Stooges: A masterpiece album that was largely written overnight in a New York City hotel room! Just think about it: The first time you heard Iggy's voice coming out of the speakers: "Well, it's 1969, OK ..." Do I need to say more?
3. Love it to Death: It's got some of Alice Cooper's best songs, like "The Ballad of Dwight Fry." That's the one where Alice used the straitjacket onstage and sang: "I gotta get outta here!" over and over. Produced by Bob Ezrin, the Canadian musical genius. His crazy, symphonic arrangements combined with the band's badass, streetwise attitude, makes this album a fucking classic and a huge influence on Turbonegro.
2. Back in the U.S.A.: The MC5 balance the stupid and epic in a successful way. It becomes art. A teenage high school dance to god.
1. motor city madmen: The bubblegum melodies and the machine-gun riffage. The dazzling showmanship and ultra left-wing manifestos. Sweaty Afros and bass players carrying knives. Two-chord, 20-minute jams about finger fucking played in psychedelic ballrooms. Very long hair and stupid stares that probably upset parents deeply. Rock culture probably reached some kind of peak around this point in Detroit circa 1970. Honestly, it never got any better than this.
