Radio DJs Origix and D.C. have been rockin’ indie airwaves for nearly three years, playing the hottest hip-hop records from Detroit and the Midwest. Known for their willingness to support local artists that mainstream radio stations ignore, Origix and D.C.’s weekly show The Zone (WHFR 89.3FM) has become a hip-hop staple throughout Michigan. Without funds to compete with corporate pigs and bigwigs, WHFR survives off public support. This week, The Zone is hosting a live Radiothon for WHFR, a benefit featuring live performances of the brilliant music that wack-ass radio stations are too pussy to play. Here the DJs give up five audible treats from 2005.
Fat Killahz Guess who’s coming to Dinner: These Detroit MC’s are hungry for real; look for them on your local buffet soon.
One Be Lo S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M.: After putting in mad years in the game, homeboy finally gets the props he’s deserved. This makes us knock the dust off our old Binary Star tape.
Esham A1 Yola: No matter what anybody says, Esham paved the way for the Detroit scene and has built a massive catalog of product with a loyal fan base. Holding down the 313, A1 Yola is that uncut dope on the streets.
Living Legends Classic: Living Legends are some real hip-hop dudes from Cali: This album fits its title. It’s just what 2005 needs — no money cars and clothes on this LP.
E.C. Illa White Folks: E.C. Illa is out of Chicago and has been around
since the mid-’90s. … Look for him in your town soon.
Live WHFR Radiothon with guests One Be Lo, Raw Collection, J-Bone, ILL Uno, Abrasive Method, and P-Dog the Turntable Bully, Saturday, April 9, at The Jefferson Station Bar and Grill (251 Burke, River Rouge; 313-843-1665). www.whfr.fm.
