Throughout a career spanning more than four decades, bassist George Porter Jr. is best for his work in the Meters. Formed in 1965, the band pioneered what we now know as funk. Since then, the New Orleans native was recently honored with a Grammy lifetime achievement award, and has also worked with a diversity of artists — including Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Patti LaBelle, Robbie Robertson, Tori Amos, and more. The 70-year-old bassist is still going strong, and his upcoming gig at Ferndale's Otus Supply is a must for anyone with an appreciation of OG funk.
Porter plays on Thursday, April 12 at the Parliament Room at Otus Supply, 345 E. 9 Mile Rd., Ferndale; 248-291-6160; otussupply.com; Doors at 8 p.m.; Tickets are $20-$25.
