Tei Shi is one of those singers who crisscrosses so many musical styles it’s hard to pigeonhole her into any one genre. The Argentina-born, New York-based songstress has been on the scene since 2013, performing at festivals like Coachella and Electric Forest and opening for acts like Grimes, but she released her debut album just this year. Crawl Space is, if nothing else, a stunning showcase of layered vocals, incredible range, and a soft alt-R&B sensibility that groups her in with the likes of SZA and Banks.
Tei Shi performs at El Club on Friday, Sept. 29. Doors open at 8 p.m.; 4114 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit; 313-436-1793; elclubdetroit.com; Tickets range from $15-$17.
