Event preview: Transmit+ at DIME, Sat., August 29

Bringing together businesspeople throughout the music industry in the day and showcasing some great rising stars in EDM at night, the Transmit+ conference happens at the Detroit Institute of Music Education on August 29. The conference seems to aim to gather a diverse community of artists and musicians to talk about the music world and how to make it as an artist in the Internet age, as well as just to have fun while hearing great young artists.

Panels deal with the state of the music business, how to promote yourself and separate from everyone else trying to get noticed on the Internet, and how to make money from your music. Headlining speakers at the conference include Kevin Nixon, co-founder of the Detroit Institute of Music Education; Stacey Gamble of Dirtybird Records; and Alexis Giles, Director of Business Development at SoundCloud. Gamble and Giles both speak on the “Be Heard: Breaking through the Noise” panel, which appears to deal with the struggle to stand out when thousands of unsigned artists want to get deals and fans. This panel, with both an increasingly influential indie label and a major player in online independent music, has the promise to deliver some especially interesting insights — especially since the once super hip but probably unprofitable SoundCloud has recently come under fire for taking down songs and being generally less chill than it used to be.

Following the conference is an afterparty with four sets from relatively new musicians who deal within and sometimes outside the lines of EDM and house. After Baltimore’s .rar Kelly, you get a trifecta of Detroit dance and electronic artists — ShadyP, Sinistarr, and Superdre. Shady P is a promising up-and-comer with a heavy, somewhat distorted, uncompromising style of EDM; Sinistarr’s unique house tracks feature footwork influences; and SuperDre works a sparse, minimalist style to maximum effect. Together, they’ll be a perfect cap to a whole day filled with intellectual and musical stimulation.

Transmit+ is on Saturday, August 29 at the Detroit Institute of Music Education; 1265 Griswold Street. The conference (all ages) runs from noon to 5 p.m. and the party (21+) lasts from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets are $5 for the conference, $10 for the party, or $12 for both and can be found at transmitfestival.com.
