We last heard from tech and hip-hop producer Leonard Ware (aka Drummer B) back in 2016, when he released his heavily Detroit-inspired People Mover.  Now, he’s back with The Diamond Project EP 1, the first of two releases on Derrick May’s Transmat label.

“In Case Y’all Forgot” is powered by fast but melodic synthesized drums, with subtle keys and various voice drops saying, “This is Detroit, incase ya’ll forgot!” Meanwhile, “What at Jxxy Bout” is full of ghettotech overtones, while “Diamond” is airy, dramatic, and feels like a cinematic score from an action movie. The EP closes out with “Again,” the most traditional house track of the four and the most dance-worthy. It even features the soft and assertive poetic vocals or Detroiter jessica Care moore.

The Diamond Project wins because Ware is aggressive when incorporating Detroit grit in his production. He’s taking the baton being passed to him by May, and carving his Detroit-born sound into the world.
