This review asks many of you to hear a pair of songs you've probably heard four million times. It's likely you won't recognize them at first, but you will wonder what these songs say about total disassembly and revision.
Earthy-ambio, techno-pop team Phantasmagoria wades into the murky "Heart-Shaped Box" and turns it into slow-dance techno, haunted with reverb and echo and lulling bass, while Coyote Clean Up charmingly dilly-dallies into the skuzz-pop of "Sliver," bestowing it with watery blips and cooing synths, a neo-disco beat and blithe melody. Toward the end, CY slips in an overlooked Saint Kurt sound bite about his desire to "bring back new wave and break dancing ... and meld it to something. ..." The circle is complete. —Jeff Milo
