The Magic Stick is hosting Detroit's first Rock Lottery show on Wednesday, April 22nd to benefit The Greening of Detroit organization and in honor of Earth Day (which is also the 22nd). The concept of the "rock lottery" originated in Denton, Texas, but it has become an annual event at numerous venues nationally.

How it works: Roughly 60 band members (including members of the Dirtbombs, the Gories, the Fondas, Speedball, Silverghost and others that have been personally invited by the organization) will meet this coming Monday, April 13th, at 8 p.m. At that time, the band members will be randomly organized into 15 new groups. Each group will then have a week to learn one cover song and one original. And then on April 22nd, the groups will perform on one of two stages set up at the Stick to perform the new material.

Sounds pretty cool, actually.

According to the press release, the Greening of Detroit organization "works to guide and inspire to grow a "greener" Detroit through planting and educational programs, environmental leadership, advocacy, and by building community capacity. Through its work to enhance Detroit’s environment and educate its communities, while improving the quality of life for those who live and work in the city." And who couldn't use that?
