What David Lynch has gone and done now is written and animated a cartoon that his publicity people call “deliberately violent, deliciously crude and daringly absurd.” Nothing shocking? Well, the format is surprising — Dumbland is an eight-episode animated series available for viewing (for a price) on his personal Web site. It features a cast of repugnant individuals, and stars Randy, one of the most drunk and obnoxious individuals any wildly imaginative man like Lynch could think of. Also, they all look like they were drawn by someone who hates art. Randy’s nostrils look like two bullets headed straight for your eyes. These guys make The Simpsons look like Michelangelo angels.
Dumbland is available for members of davidlynch.com ($9.97 a month) or for purchase on DVD for $29.99 at tlavideo.com, where there are also special releases of Lynch’s 1977 experimental film Eraserhead and The Short Films of David Lynch, a box set featuring six flicks, including The Alphabet (1968) and The Amputee (1973).
