It's been a strong seven days for Detroit rapper Danny Brown. Late last week, SPIN Magazine came out with their list of the Top 50 Albums of 2011 and Brown's XXX record clocked in at number six. That's well ahead of Fleet Foxes' stunning Helplessness Blues, Jay-Z and Kanye West's Watch The Throne and Lady Gaga's much hyped Born This Way.
If that wasn't enough, when SPIN released their list of Top 40 Rap Albums of 2011, Brown's XXX landed the number one spot. Best rap album of 2011, huh? Who would have thought the king of adderall raps would be so widely embraced? While doing things 100% his way, Brown has the world's attention right now and he's doing hip-hop fans in Detroit proud. Chances are he'll be right in the thick of a 100 or so major year-end lists from music critics around the globe for his remarkably creative XXX album and one gets the sense that he's beginning to flirt with mainstream popularity whether he likes it or not.
Proof of that rests in the fact that just two days ago, he debuted the official video for his art-rap song "Monopoly" on Rollingstone.com. It's currently the most watched music video on the site and the folks at DeadHorse Films did a excellent job creating it. Without having to explain the ways that getting mentioned by Rolling Stone is, was and always will be the official benchmark of music success, Brown is clearly rolling his dice better than everyone else. Of course, that's what you're supposed to do with Monopoly, right?
