This boy-girl duo from New York has been building buzz since last year, when a handful of their songs trickled online. And like a lot of their Brooklyn-based peers, Cults are a modern indie-rock band that looks back for inspiration. On their self-titled debut, they run through the first part of the '60s with aplomb: traces of doo-wop, girl groups, lounge and even soul-inflected pop are covered. Their best songs — "Abducted," "Go Outside," "You Know What I Mean" — come early. But their trip (part nostalgic, part hipster cool) doesn't really let up. Things begin to fall into a pattern midway through Cults, with Madeline Follin's soft voice resting just below the surface of the waves of instrumentation that wash over the songs. Cults do for the East Coast what Best Coast does for the West.
