Christopher Pratt & the Rose Cult has got around to putting out a full-length album, Welcome to the Rose Cult and as you might tell from the appropriately cultish cover art, there is an eastern, semi-religious feel to the music that is both warming and disconcerting. The highlight is probably “I’m a Surfer Now”, which sounds like the guys are meditating on a beach.
Jack & the Bear, an Ann Arbor-based folk rock band, sent us some songs this week and, so impressed are we that we’re hoping to set them up with a City Slang feature soon. Check this lot out. There are seven of them, some of them siblings, and the music straddles a beautiful line between the Levellers (or perhaps the Saw Doctors) and something big and anthemic like the Arcade Fire. Maybe a little Gogol Bordello. The song “The Atrocious Tale” is spectacular.
