Local rap veteran Dogmatic put out Living Proof, his new album, on his old friend Proof’s birthday and that’s entirely fitting because the two worked together in the awesome Promatic project before Proof’s tragic and untimely death. He would surely be proud of his pal though, as Living Proof is a very special hip-hop record. Sharp, angry and smart, every tune hits the mark.
Alien Inquisition’s The Virgin might have been released in 2010, but who are we to deny a review when it lands so pleasantly in our box. In fact, ‘pleasant’ isn’t the right word at all. These guys offer nightmarish psychedelic garage rock that really gets under your skin and makes you feel like there are ants deep in there. It’s gloriously nasty stuff. Love it.
Five Horse Johnson’s latest effort, The Taking of Black Heart (Small Stone) is a fantastic record. This band lays down heavy blues rock with a swagger and a sledgehammer, simultaneously sounding sexy and pissed. The musicianship is exquisite, and the tunes are superb.
