J Dilla, the subject of a forthcoming City Slang, would up on our desk again this week thanks to two very cool pieces of vinyl. The Dilladog/Dillatroit EP and the “Birthright/Jay Dee’s Revenge” 10” (Ruff Draft) are banging, with Dilla’s eclectic DJ skills highlighted. Man, one minute he sounds like he’s scoring a police movie, the next he’s chilling. The likes of Danny Brown and Guilty Simpson provide the vocals, and both records are worthy of your time.
BWLR sent us the new Jak Is Bak EP. Essentially a techno release, the EP also features elements of acid and Detroit techno and, to be honest, made for some pretty intense listening while working at my desk. This music is for dancing to, 3 a.m., friends around you, half naked. There are so many twists and turns here that your head gets left behind from time to time, but fuck it. Leave it there.
All the Wild Children is essentially Sharkey & the Habit, with a new drummer (Matt Adusky from the Bobby Electric) from what we can make out. They sent over a couple of new tracks for review, the best of which is “Breaker Breaker”. A wild and raucous punk rock blues extravaganza. Much like Sharkey, only louder.
Lac La Belle is an Americana duo featuring Jennie Knaggs and Nick Schillace, and the new album, Bring on the Light, is beautiful. Authentic, heart-felt and poignant, every lyric seems to hit home. “You build your entire life around make-believe” they sing, and I wonder if they mean me. I don’t think I do that, but they sound so honest, I kinda question myself. Brilliant stuff.
Blue Pontiac has its album launch party this Friday, July 20, at the New Dodge Lounge in Hamtramck, and it has to be worth the drive. The music is gloriously olde timee, but not in a cheesy way. The album is called Gone, and all eleven tracks make you want to go to a BBQ, eat some pork and corn, and then dance. Love it.
