Remember – if you send it, it will get reviewed. That’s the City Slang promise. It doesn’t matter what genre the music is – as long as it has a Metro Detroit connection, it’ll get in. Preferably, we’d like to concentrate on new releases but, while we’re getting warmed up here, feel free to send back catalog material too. Send CDs, vinyl, cassettes, demos and 8-tracks to Brett Callwood, City Slang, Metro Times, 733, St. Antoine, Detroit, MI 46226. Email MP3s and streaming links to mt.cityslang@gmail.com.
Tendril recently put out a video for a song called “Three Hives”, and it’s a fascinating little bit of visual. While the song falls somewhere between electro-trance and industrial and the vocals are whispered and creepy, the video is like a vision from hell. Creepy rubber masks and various other odd images are the order of the day, and the Aphex Twin influence is obvious. Good stuff though.
Cold Men Young also offered up a video, for their “Time Bomb” single. It’s a beauty too. One of the best rap outfits in the area, these guys have a gift for slamming down unique beats, and the rhymes are razor sharp. The video is great for playing “where in Detroit is that?”
Yung Khan’s latest mix tape is another slab of fresh hip-hop. Again, the lyrics are smart, and very Detroit-centric. Tracks like “Phenomenon” and “Cinderella” are exquisite.
WarrenPeace’s From Detroit to Darabougou is yet more awesome hip-hop. I guess it’s just that sort of week. And to be honest, that’s fine because the weather is getting warmer, and these sort of jams are the order of the day. WarrenPeace is particularly chilled, with the beats sedate. The energy comes from the vocals, which are sharp. The opening “Inhale” sets the tone for a great mini-album.
