Rio and the Rockabilly Revival are the stars of this week’s City Slang column in the paper. The Midnight Rebel Sessions (self-released) is the infamous demo that went viral before getting an official release, and it’s easy to see why it became so popular so fast. Raw, sensual, musically brilliant and featuring a mixture of covers (including some by her Uncle Jack Scott) and originals, it’s the happiest accident we’ve heard in years.
The interesting thing about the other four releases this week is that they were all handed to me at the Blowout. Heartbreak Dallas and the Unfaithfuls’ Not Primitive (self-released) EP is packed with awesome alt-country tunes and some smooth, husky vocals courtesy of Mariah Dallas. The Blowout set was great too.
Patrick Davy & the Ghosts are far, far better live than on record, and The First Cold Night doesn’t really change that. The songs are there, but somehow Davy’s normally sound emotional delivery doesn’t sit well on disc. Weird, but maybe next time
Six and the Sevens featuring John Bissa from Spitting Nickels, play very cool retro alt-indie. The Preview CD Bissa handed me at the Majestic features some awesome riffing, but the treat is in the tunes. I don’t think this has an official release. It is, as the title suggests, a preview for what is to come. Based on this, it should be good. Jim Diamond produced, by the way.
Finally, and perhaps best of all, is the split single from House Phone and Passalacqua, from New Fortune Records. House Phone contribute the beautifully sedate yet emotionally full “Crayons”, while Passalacqua pop up with the jazzy hip-hop Sunday lie-in that is “Dead Fish Eyes”. Both tracks are cool as fuck.
