Zombie Jesus and the Chocolate Sunshine Band really is something else. Don’t be put off by the ludicrous band name. The band’s shoegazey acoustic indie drone is actually refreshing. The sound like they should hate the world, and yet the lyrics on this self-titled and self-released six song EP suggest that they love it with warm hearts. Song titles like “Love Song”, “Hooray for the Sunshine” and the awesome “Lonely Vampire” give away the dry sense of humor here.
I’ve reviewed electro guru Twoven before but the dude has two new videos out and they should be checked out immediately. The first, “Organic”, is a slamming drum and bass tune with a killer video featuring chaps diving in a lake. Go see. The second is “Anthem”, an equally intense piece of drum & bass (or drumstep). Check this guy out while he is still making music in his bedroom.
Brae is a singer/songwriter project formed by local drummer Brandon Husken and Another Time and Place (self-released) is his debut album. If a singer/songwriter project formed by a drummer sounds like a nightmare, then I can relate. I was dreading playing this stuff, but it just goes to show how wrong assumptions can be. Husken’s writing is magnificent, both lyrically and in terms of melody. The songs are blessed with a subtle pop brilliance that is Brae’s secret weapon. Love it.
