The Dave Edwards Band’s Pickin’ Singles (Hanzie) is a great collection of rock ’n’ roll boogie songs from Detroit’s own answer to Rod Stewart (although Edwards never went sappy). The erstwhile Look mainman is one of our genuine gems, and the songs on here showcase that fact, from “I Found Love” through “Rock ’n’ Roll Fever."
The new Some Velvet Evening album, No Law Against Talkin’ (self-released), features sweet country duets that seem to be from a bygone age – the sort of thing Duey Cox was parodying with “Let’s Duet”. The record is ultimately charming though – honest and emotive. Not to be dissed.
Passalacqua seem intent on telling us exactly what is wrong with Christmas with the hip-hop Grinch single “A Very Frugal Christmas”. It’s kinda funny in a “we’re too damn fly to be festive” sort of way. Thing is though, I don’t buy it. I bet these dudes are decorating their trees as I type.
