Infernal Overdrive’s Last Rays of the Dying Sun is the latest release from Small Stone Records and, after a quick glance at the phenomenal cover art, we knew we’d love it. Imagine Motorhead or early AC/DC playing in a bar in Royal Oak via Red Bank, New Jersey, to a crowd of no one but the opening bands and their girlfriends, yet still kicking ass. It’s metallic boogie rock, and it’s awesome.
Remember Mayaeni? I have written about her before, back in September 2010. She sent over a new song, “Black Hole”, for review, and it’s great. Skin from Skunk Anansie meets Tom Petty. It’s catchy, soulful and beautifully performed. Can’t ask for more than that.
Fresh from performing at the Hamtown Hoedown, the Robin Moore Band’s Somewhere North of Nashville (self-released) is another fantastic release this week. Female-fronted outlaw country / alt-country / Americana (delete as and when you give a shit), the songs are impassioned and gritty, and the production is accomplished enough to not polish away any of the flaw that make it great. Wonderful.
