Remember – if you send it, it will get reviewed. That’s the City Slang promise. It doesn’t matter what genre the music is – as long as it has a Metro Detroit connection, it’ll get in. Preferably, we’d like to concentrate on new releases but, while we’re getting warmed up here, feel free to send back catalog material too. Send CDs, vinyl, cassettes, demos and 8-tracks to Brett Callwood, City Slang, Metro Times, 733, St. Antoine, Detroit, MI 46226. Email MP3s and streaming links to [email protected].

The Horse Cave Trio’s Hart County (Funky D) album is the latest release from Tino Gross (of the Howling Diablos)’s Funky D Records, a label that is putting out some great stuff of late. This is certainly no different. The rockabilly-infused alt-country is filled with attitude, swagger and a shit load of fun. The cover of Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues” is awesome, but the band’s own songs, from the opening “Hart County Outlaw Blues” to the says-it-all “Young, Sweet & Fine” and fabulous. Go get on this horse.

Empty Orchestra is a band from Flint that plays around Detroit a lot, and the One More Time, All Together (Paper + Plastick) album is fascinating. There is something about this indie rock that brings to mind the Cure, but I’m not totally sure why. It’s moody, and mildly darky (or perhaps shadey), but not at all depressing. The tunes are infectious and solid, and the album requires more than one listen for them to sink it. Great stuff.

For a really unusual listening experience, check out Mister Thrasher’s Through a Glass Darkly (301 Studios) EP. According to the bio, “Music is so dense and omnidirectional. Hip-hop got me started, but the freedom of music is what keeps me going.” Mister Thrasher is not lying. The Southfield dude touches on most aspects of rock ’n’ roll, electronica and stome other stuff in just five tracks. Impressive, unique and ingenuitive.
