There is some fascinating, eclectic music going on at Trinosophes this week.
On Friday, May 3, Josephine Foster performs. They say, “As an adolescent Josephine Foster worked as a funeral and wedding singer, and aspired to become an opera singer. After her studies she began to record demos of her own songs, resulting in the early recordings There Are Eyes Above (2000), an album of ukulele accompanied songs strongly influenced by Tin Pan Alley, and an album of children's songs, Little Life (2001).
For several years she worked as a singing teacher in Chicago, performing with a variety of acts including Born Heller, a project with free jazz-bassist Jason Ajemian, and The Children's Hour, a pop band formed with songwriter Andrew Bar. In 2004, joined by her occasional backing band The Supposed (Brian Goodman on guitar and Rusty Peterson on drums), she released a psychedelic rock record called All the Leaves Are Gone, which has drawn comparison to Patti Smith and Jefferson Airplane.
Before that, on Thursday May 2, you can see Steve Cohn with Jeff Marx & Kurt Prisbe. According to the press release, “NYC pianist/Shakuhachist Steve Cohn returns, in duos and trios with Detroiters Jeff Marx (winds) and Kurt Prisbe (drums) and Joel Peterson (strings). Over the years Cohn's music has evolved from jazz-based music (making records with notables like Reggie Workman) to a non-western music and free improvisation idiom. This evening he'll present multiple sets in various configurations with the local players.”
